The Review: Psychokinesis

Psychokinesis 8/10

I just finished watching this crazy ass South Korean movie on Netflix called Psychokinesis. I enjoyed this so damned much. More than I thought I would. What I liked the most was that in a regular length movie they managed to create a superhero origin story, go into his past, and his attempts to be a hero to his daughter and redeem himself. It is such a simple story but people will find ways to over complicate things. This is about a guy named Shin Seok-heon that works as a security guard stealing things from the break room when he can and then getting drunk and passing out at home. One day while on a walk he stops for some water and takes a sip not knowing that a meteor had crashed and contaminated the drink he had. He later discovers that he has telekinetic powers.

Meanwhile his daughter Shin Roo-mi that he left behind when she was little runs a restaurant that is threatened by goons to be torn down for land development. She tries to fight back with her neighbors but they can only do so much. Her father shows up back in her life and she wants none of it after her mother died trying to help her out. Seok-heon tries to show his daughter that he now has these powers that she considers magician tricks. Once he starts to see how serious the bad guys are and more people get attacked he starts to exhibit more of his abilities.

I'll probably watch this movie a couple more times because it was entertaining. It is not something you need to rush and watch, but if you ever want to just check out a simple story then this is good. I liked the special effects used because they have a soft quality to them that matches the look of the film itself. I liked that there was no explanation given for why the meteor gave him powers. There are no scientists hunting him down for experiments. Loved that.
