DVD Afternoon Podcast #60: A Yakuza And A Yakker

Monogram twins Masahiro Shinoda and Martin Scorsese occupy the spotlight in this week's episode of DVD Afternoon. First, Heather and I review the Criterion release of Shinoda's 1964 yakuza neo-noir Pale Flower, which is part Jean-Pierre Melville, part Seijun Suzuki, and which contains some of the most intriguingly impenetrable gambling sequences of all time; then, we take a look at Public Speaking, Martin Scorsese's new made-for-HBO profile of Fran Lebowitz, and debate whether Scorsese needs to put more work into his documentaries. We've also got mini-reviews of Lionel Rogosin's 1957 quasi-documentary about New York down-and-outers On the Bowery, and Martin Scorsese's 1978 documentary short American Boy. Plus, we list our picks for the week's other most noteworthy new DVDs and Blu-Rays.

Here's how the episode breaks down:

0:00: Intro/On the Bowery/American Boy
13:17: Estelle (featuring Kanye West): "American Boy"
14:21: Pale Flower
28:32: Amon Düül II, "Flower of the Orient"
29:33: Public Speaking
43:32: Serge Gainsbourg, "New York USA"
44:34: Other noteworthy new DVDs and Blu-Rays/Outro

I've got lots of YouTube clips for you this week! First, here's the trailer for Lionel Rogosin's On the Bowery, the film Heather talks about in the opening segment:

Here's the scene from American Boy that Quentin Tarantino borrowed and embroidered upon for the adrenaline-shot scene from Pulp Fiction:

This is the entertaining vintage video for Serge Gainsbourg's "New York USA," which is sort of a recurring motif in Public Speaking:

And here is James Baldwin's debate with William F. Buckley, a portion of which also appears in Public Speaking. Seriously, somebody make a James Baldwin documentary or biopic already!
